For years I kept that list privately: which companies showed up when they said they would, which quotes matched the final bill, which recommendations held up over time. Howdy WilCo is that list, made public and held to a method. It's the answer I give when someone asks who I'd trust with their home.
WilCo Home Guide is written and maintained by me and a small team. Every listing, guide, and cost page gets more than one set of eyes before it publishes, and we live in the county we cover — the same hail, the same clay, the same August.
Provider rankings on our best-of pages are compiled from public Google ratings and review counts, ordered by rating first and review volume second. We don't accept payment for ranking positions, and we say so on every page. Where a company's recent reviews carry real caveats — scheduling complaints, disputes, mixed patterns — we note it in the listing rather than hiding it. Where a city's market is thin in a category, we list fewer companies and say the category is growing rather than padding the list. Ratings are a snapshot and change over time; always confirm current licensing, insurance, and pricing directly.
You'll see three kinds of picks on this site, and each one tells you its basis on the page:
Personal-use picks are companies we actually hire at our own home. That's the strongest endorsement we can give, and where you see it, it means exactly what it says — we have no financial relationship with those companies.
Partner picks are companies we work with directly and may be compensated by. Those cards carry a disclosure saying so, and the independent rankings below them are never affected.
Data picks are the badge you'll see inside the rankings: the provider with the strongest balance of rating and review depth in our data for that city and trade, excluding anyone with recent-review caveats. No relationship, no payment — just the numbers, weighted sensibly.
